How can I get my stair to show the treads as grating in section?  Would I just create a rectangular nosing and then use model lines to represent the grating?

Use a "Profile-Stair Nosing" family for that.

I must be missing something and its probably really easy but can you show me the actual profile that you used?  When I try to do the profile the way I thought it would work i get a warning "This profile cannot be used for the front of treads.  Please choose a profile composed of a closed loop of lines with exactly one lines coincident with the y-axis.  This lines will define the connection of this profile to the tread."  Thanks a lot for the help!
