we have walls from the architect linked (and copy/monitored) into our file. it appears they have a detail component embedded into their wall type. How can I turn this off? Also how did they do this

I don't know of any way to embed a detail component isn a wall type. ...so this must be somewhere else. In any case,
goto your VG settings, Revit links tab and modify the model VG settings for this linked file and turn off the detail items category.

Open their file detached and cut a section through it. Then see if you can select this thing to identify what it is. You can also place a copy of this wall someweher and see if the detail is still in it.
I think this is a sweep of some sort...somehow.

It looks like he created a detail family where he inserted the screw, angle, drainage mats, and all of the lines hat create the sweep then loaded that family into a profile family then loaded the profile into the project. You would need to take out everything you did not want in the detail family. I don't believe you can just shut off these items.

I have not seen a sweep use an embedded detail element that is not a closed profile. ... Learn something new every day. I think what they have done here is bad practice ...
Your fix. ... I would modify a family in their file. These use families called wall base sweeps in this wall. These have an embedded family called family 3 which has the flashing, drainage mats & termination bar detail elements in it. You could just delete these items and relod the families or I tried setting the family 3 to shared which I then loadeded into the wall base sweeps and then loaded these into the project. I thought I could then turn off the detail elements but low and behold ... they went away.
