how do i change the material or colour of a beam in revit, i have exposed beams and i want them to be white but i get the awful steel washed colour

Material color is controlled in the material editor. Search "materials? in your HELP to learn more about the material editor.

Yes, structural beams from Revit Structure do not have a Material Parameter. This is not a problem however, all you have to do is add one yourself by opening the .rfa associated with the beam you like and in the family editor add a mat parameter.
