It is somewhat restricting to only have dash, dot or space available when making line types. Sometimes it would be good to be capable of adding text or symbols. ie for a ---gas--- line or fence line with an ---o--- or ---[]---
wouldnt that make life simple? Autocad can do it, Revit is autocad, cant they share?

This has been discussed for years and is on the wish list. BTW - Searching the forums is always a good idea.
Look at this blog under feb 07 - there is an article on how this can be achieved.

Ive read the blog which has got me so far but Im totally lost to be able to create a formula of the number of times the word / symbol appears within a length. I can only seem to get the word / symbol to appear at the fixed locations and but nothing changes if the line gets longer. I need it to add more words/symbols the longer the line gets.
Any hints for a formula for this. I have searched the forums, blogs, and revit help.

Here, check this out. I found this online a while ago and have improved upon it. The number of text instances is an array with a parameter for number.

I WATCHED A SCREEN CAST FROM AUOTDESK UNIVERSTIY LAST WEEK. I THINK IT WAS FROM 2010 AU. thEY DID EXACTLY WHAT YOU WERE WANTING Y USING A GENERIC LINE BASED FAMILY. HE PUT SYMBOLS TEXT. NOT TO HARD TO SET UP. iF YOU HAVE A AU SUBSCRIPTION I WOULD LOOK IT UP. IF THINK IT WAS CALLED TIPS AND TRICKS, AGAIN IT WAS FROM THE 2010 AU. 2011 AU HAS ONE CALLED 45 TIPS IN 45 MIN. IT IS NOT IN THAT ONE.

This post explains it step by step in a very effective way.

However, this method requires you to manually enter the number of times the text appears in the line. I didn't like that so I modified the "Label Instances" Parameter to be Length/666. I also made the "End Gap" 333 so at corners/ends it would appear to be part of one continuous line. Eventually I changed the end gap to 400 so text didn't overlap.
See attached family for 1 and 2 hr fire rating.
