This is a WIP...
I shall have to think a little more in depth as to what are the real questions here.
However...
What are the Pros and Cons of separating documentation files into "control files" that reference main model files?
If a project is separated into two types of files a file for embelishment with anno, text and dimensions and a model file .

I don't want to go back to CAD limitations. The advantages of Revit are one file.

I agree with WWHub, you would be mad to think about using Revit to create seperate/linked files. The program has so many filters and display options, you can easily control what information is shown on any aspect - whether it be the actual model, or documentation. The beauty is that having one fully intact and comprenhensive model leads to alot less missed, forgotten, inaccurate and redundant data on a project.
Why would you want to create seperate files out of interest?

Aspect,
We have been forced by the Progenitors from interstate who started the project with some ideal BIM modelling in mind to use control files.
I find that working in other revit tech's files confusing in that their view nomenclature isn't clear. Further the files are on a retarded server that has some serious daisy chaining rather than a direct SAN connection so opening multiple files is painful.
To give justice to them they are working on a 2.5 square kilometre floor space, 10 level Hospital with highly detailed model families inserted.
Why they are using control files I don't know. Maybe you can take a guess from the info I have supplied and I shall query this for you.
