I'm getting ready to start a new project, and for various reasons I would really preffer to work in 2012. The problem is, the architect is working in 2011 and has no plans to upgrade this project. I have heard that there is a way to export a file from 2012 that can be imported into 2011. I have never tried this, and I'd like to get some more info before I take it to the architect as a suggestion.
How difficult is it to import/export this file?
How difficult will it be for the architect to use our file as a background?
What (if anything) is likely to be lost in the transfer?
I'm working in a foodservice consulting shop, so our model is going to mostly contain specialty equipment families, with a few wall/doors and some modeled in place casework.

As 3D cad or Autodesk exchange files? I haven't heard of any good methods of backsaving, and exporting/importing through various file formats will likely eliminate any possible visibility control on the architects end. If your file is only going to be used as a reference, then you can go this route I suppose.
I'm still irritated by the inability to backsave. The process of upgrading a file to a latest version is virtually the same. obviously, some objects/information would have to de discarded, but in many cases, that would be acceptable.

Whatever format is going to work best as a 3D/2D background, with as little information lost as possible. I don't think it's going to be neccessary to adjust visibility on their end, I'll just create export views in my model. They just need a background.

I'd go with 3D cad, in that case.
You just have to export the current view -- so, make sure it's a 3D view that's open. It also only exports what is visible in that view, so, section boxes and visibility settings can control what amount of information is exported to cad.
Maybe other people have other suggestions, and maybe there IS a better way of exporting in 2012 I don't know about -- this is just the process i went through to get information to a consultant using sketchup, and it was pretty smooth.
The downside is that 3D cad get pretty big.
