When I cut a section in plan, and I want to reference an existing section that is already on a sheet, I always get this "detail view 1" thing and there's no tail or bubble, just a line, and I have to go up and switch it to some other type of section.  Why would anyone ever want this and how do I just get a section cut when I want a section cut?

If you want to reference another view, then you have to check that box on the options bar before you start placing the callout.

I know that.  I have completed like 50 huge jobs in revit.

If you look at the screenshots I've attached...

In shot #1 I am referencing a view

#2 I have selected the view I want to reference and I have cut the section, but there is only a line instead of a real cut.

#3 I am changing "Drafting View Detail View 1" to "Drafting View Masonry"

#4 I have changed it and now my section cut comes to life.

I am sick of doing this 100's of times on a project and I have never known why it does this.

Obviously, you didn't realize that Revit remembers what you did last...  Try this:

  1. Place a real section using that section marker that you want.
  2. Now place another section using the reference other view.
  3. Now place a real section using the headless section marker
  4. And now place another section using the reference other view.

Learn anything from this?

Nope.  It has to do with the properties of the actual drafing view, not the section cut type.  If you see the new attached file, you'll see that in the actual drafting view I have an option for what kind of drafting view I want to make it be.  And of course by default it is "Detail View 1" which of course produces this single line when I reference that drafting view.  so what I want is to eliminate the need for this property and just have my section cuts come out normally.
