For some reason I'm not allowed to host a railing to a monolithic stair that I created in a design option. If I'm in plan and I click the stair as a host nothing happens and no railing appears. In 3D view revit tells me, "No element in a secondary Option can be referenced by an element outside that Option." Which is not true because I have the design option opened that the stair was modeled in and can edit the stair sketch from here as well. Any thoughts?

The railing has to be created while in the design option.

That's where I'm trying to create it. I'm in the same design option that the stair was created in and I'm trying to create the railing. Then I get the error. What else could be going wrong?

Why didn't you allow the railing to be created when you did the stairs?

Does it matter?

It should not matter except you have to create the railing while in the design option and I always create the railings when I do the stairs. Much easier to do it then.
You can't create it outside the option then try to host it in the option.
And since you seem to be having problems, why not do them both at the same time? BTW - In order for the railing to be hosted, the sketch has to be within the confinds of the stair. If you want it outside the stair, like a stringer, face based railing, the railing still has to be within the stair sketch and you use the offset function in the railing properties to locate the railing.

All of that is well and good, but it just doesnt work for some reason. I guess the only solution is to build it over again to appease its will. Thanks anyway. I guess its just a glitch.
