I work for a security consulting firm. We design security systems for hospitals, schools, courthouses, etc. One main focus we have is door hardware and that's where my current problem resides. I need to be able to add parameters to door families that are already in the Arch model so that our security door componenets can be scheduled. I know one way to do this is to tab>select wall>copy/paste them into my MEP model, add parameters to the door families and set those parameters as columns in the door schedule, but since the files are linked in and are still being updated regularily I'm not quite sure how to accomplish this and maintain the changes I have made to the families through the updates... I could monitor the walls to alert me of position changes of the walls and openenings, but how would my door families react with the updates? I presume they would either be overwritten or As stated before, I'm just looking for a way to add door hardware parameters to the door families from the Arch model so that the hardware can be scheduled, I just have no clue on how to accomplish this. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,Kcaparella

Here is a solution that I tested.
- Using a generic, face based template create a new family:
- Call it door hardware
- Set its category to doors
- Add Shared parameters to this hardware family to contain your data
- You might add some visual elements so you can see the family.
- Save and load into your project
- Place this family on all of your doors... (I placed mine on top the door leaf.)
- And give these "new" doors the same door number as their host
- Schedule them
If the original doors are moved, the family moves with them. If the family is deleted, you get a coordination monitoring alert that a hosting element is gone. And if you expand that alert, it tells you what element.
This was a good question and it helped me learn some new tricks. Thanks for asking.

Thanks WWHub! I think this may work for us. We are considering using a door elevation tag in plan view of this family to kill two birds with one stone. Just a few questions/concerns tho: 1) What if door tag changes in arch model but doesnt move? - then we wouldnt be alerted to that change and our tag would be incorrect (ex. A door tagged "1" now becomes "1A" because a new door, "1B", was added to that room.) Any way to monitor this? And 2) What if door tag stays the same but swing changes? Would elevation tags follow suit? Is there any way to be notified if this does happen (outside of asking the architect to alert us every time they change something of that sort)? ... Even so, this is a lot better than what I had going two hours ago and I am greatly appreciative of you for your help! Thanks again, Kcaparella

I don't see any way to connect the two or to be alerted if a tag changed...BUT - I would have a working schedule that would have the linked true doors as well as these...
I might also have a working plan that has your tags and the linked file set to show the architects plan view with his tags.... probably one or the other set in VG to a different color. This plan set to DO NOT DELETE .... and never placed on a sheet. You would visually "inspect" this view.

Just want to make sure I am understanding everything correctly...
I have created a generic face based annotation family and added all necessary parameters. I then changed the family category to "door" so that it could be tagged and scheduled as needed. In plan view I've nested an elevation tag (why not kill 2 birds with one stone right?). I'm now in the process of creating "types" of families to represent different door riser diagrams that all have different hardware requirements which will be "checked off" as necessary for each (adjusting the nested elevation tag to match each riser's detail number and sheet info). Since this door hardware family I am creating is face based it should move with the associated face/door I place it on. I will then match the hardware family's door tag to that of the true door in the linked model so that our "door numbers" match the ones in the linked arch model (for scheduling purposes). In order to monitor any changes in the door tags from the linked arch model (ie if door 1 becomes door 1a because the architect decided to add another door to the room called 1b) I'm going to create a working view that has both the true door tags from the linked arch model and also the door tags from my hardware family instances shown in different colors - this will still require manual inspection of the drawings for every update but it's a lot better than having to hunt those changes down any other way. The only issue I think I may run into is monitoring the door swing (which will have an effect the detail number in the elevation tag) - for this I guess I'll just have to inspect them in the working view the same way I will have to inspect the door tags (only these will be more difficult because I will have to compare them to an "external reference" like an old pdf or something like that)? GEESH! It'd be so much easier if Revit would allow copy/monitor to be used on doors! *hint hint to any Autodesk people who may be reading this*

... any ideas as to why the copy/monitor multiple option and the selection tool while in copy command would not work? I checked the multiple box and went around clicking all the walls I'd like to copy, then hit finish in the options toolbar before hitting finish in the ribbon but none of the walls that I selected copied. I have also tried using the selection tool to select all of the walls in certain areas but nothing happens. I followed the autodesk documentation on how this is supposed to be done to a key... Idk what I'm doing wrong? Thanks -kyle
