I've had this happen before too. I left a render going overnight and in the morning, it was finished and looked great but I couldn't save it, all the button were frozen. My only option was to hit 'print screen' and then paste and crop it in Paint, how embarrasing. I lost the quality that I wanted but was atleast able to provide something at the deadline.

I guess it was just too big of a file (30 MB). When I do test renderings with screen resolutions I can save just fine. It's kind of crazy there is no warning or dialog box though. I am also rendering on a laptop but still it's crazy.

If I remember correctly, if you try to save to file first and there is not enough memory available, your up the creek.  You should always pick export first, then try to save to project if you really want it in the project.  Most times I don't.  If I need it later, I can always insert the image that I saved.
