When I create a wall opening, its top and base offsets default to a value that comes from some mystery value. I get the error "opening does not cut its host" because the default values are (in this case) some 3m above the wall. I can change the opening with no problem by selecting the opening and changing the top and base offset values, however I dont want to do this for every new opening.

How do I change the default values so that when i create an opening it will default to what I want (say top offset -450 and base offset 1200?)

Thanks in advance.

I cant align an opening with an architectural background from an elevation. I assume there is some way to set a default value?

You are using RST. The window opening tool is an architectural tool it is a family set up to work from the bottom up. I expect that you are using the more standard settings for structural which is to look down, and build down that is you are on the layer above and want to place your window in the floor below. The architectural window opening wants to place it above the level that you are viewing. So, you can modify the view property bar see attached which will allow you to place like the architect would, or you can modify the window opening to place the head height below the level you are placing on. in order to see the window being placed you can set the graphic display to wireframe which allows you to see through the wall.

Edited to add the windows property bar

I am using the wall opening tool, not the architect window tool. I have attached some screen shots to hopefully explain better. In the secon shot, you can see the properties box. This box only appears when you select the opening. It does not appear before you create the opeining. I want to change the default values that appear in this box. In this case, the values of 69.2 for top offset and 330.8 for base offset just appear. I can change them to my required -450 and 1200 respectively, but how can i make them default to -450 and 1200?

And while we're at it, why does coarse view shorten the view of framing members. It seems to happen at corners mostly. See attached picture. Its very anoying as i need to draw an annotation line over the top of the member to show its full extent. Yes, the full extent shows up in medium or fine detail levels, but that does not suit the structural drawing style.

I am using Revit 2013 - and I seem to be having the same problem that this person posted about.

When I do a wall opening, I though that in the previous 2011 version I was using, the properties pop up would be "live" and you could adjust the base and height before you clicked it to finish.  Now, you don't get that opportunity, and it seems all my openings are defaulting to a 3 ft high sill and 8 ft height.

Is there some new place for setting defaults that I haven't found?

Its nice that you can draw an opening in Elevation, but I mostly draw them in plan - and that's when I want the setting to be adjustable.

I personally don't like the wall opening tool because it has always been hard to use.  We use a non-scheduled door opening.  Then we can set type parameters to control it.  We also have a wall niche family that can be placed anywhere with any depth.  Just a faced based family.
