I am trying to have Revit put the volume of a concrete column in a tag. I know that the information is available by scheduling but I need to have the information on a plan view along with the other column data. I have tried to add shared parameters to the column family but because the height of the column is really an instance property you can't use that parameter in a formula to calculate the volume. Am I missing something simple or is there an easy work around?

Instance properties can be used in formulas for a value that is also an instance parameters- you just can't use instance parameters to drive a TYPE parameter.
That said, in your column family, create dimensions for the length, width, height, or whatever dimensions you need to calculate the volume, and make each dimension an instance parameter. (These do not need to be shared, unless you need to schedule them in addition to the volume.) Then create a shared Volume parameter and make it an instance parameter as well. Type in the formula that will return your volume value. Flex the family to make sure it's working. You should see your volume value changing as you change dimensions. Load the family into the project. place a few instances with varying dimensions, and you're good to go.
Make sure your tag references the same shared Volume parameter that the family uses, and it will show the volume each time you tag a column.

Brilliant. Thanks for the help. One note is that since you already have Type Parameters for the height and width of the column the new instance parameters that you create for calculating the volume should snap to the actual column side rather than the reference plane, otherwise you overconstrain the family. Thanks again.
