I went into doors tool and tried to load the cased opening and arched opening. Neither one will load.  The message I get is that I must choose family files of the category doors.  I dont understand this message.

if you're gonna use the door tool you must choose a family in the door category.. in other words- if you are going to use door tools you need to be working on a door..  a wall opening is not a door..

The wall opening was located inside the doors folder.  If the opening is not a door what category do I go into to load it?  is it a window?  is it a furniture?  is it a type of wall?

The  opening cased family inside the door family folder is an generic models family. Select Component -> place component and then load opening cased family.

yeah everything in the doors folder is not of the door category.. that opening-cased family is of the category "generic models".. it would be interesting to go through everything in all those folders and see how many diffferent categories are in them..

Eventually we all have to build our revit library and organize the folders to suite our office setting or preference.
