This is a copy of my performance page, you can see the Computer Manufacturer, I have a 32" Vizio Screen, and this runs Revti 2012 very satisfactory.
I would avoid the Raid combo which is what I had to begin with. It eventually got out of sync and what a mess that was. Now I just use Sync Toy and copy my working files from my main drive to my backup drive, it just takes a few minutes to update. This has been working great.
This machine is getting old, I'm sure, but it still works fine for me, I don't do alot of rendering. Maybe someone will post a better system. You should be able to do very well with your alloted budget.
Good luck

I would always avoid getting the "best" system, because they're exponentially more expensive than a "good" system. And they'll no longer be the best within a couple months--they become average-- and like any other good box can then stay competitive for a couple years. Not worth $2000 in my opinion. I'd get a $2000 laptop, and another $2000 laptop in two years, and that'll buy you 4 years of relevance, wheras the alienware would probably be obsolete within 3.
Even the best machines still can't make revit run like silk, sadly. It has always been a moving target.

i agree with itsmyalterego. i would drop down a level and increase the ram. 24GB if the system will support it.

I realise I will be way too late, but $4000 is a huge budget. Surely you could get both of those computers for $4k? The z600's ram of 6gig is pretty light though.
I have an i7 2600k, gtx580 and revit runs as smooth as silk.

I bought my 6-core i7 990x from Dell for $2200
including;
12GB Ram
decent graphic cad
23" monitor
... This machine runs soooo smooth in Revit 2012... Its really a dream come true.
I have pondered overclocking it? Just for the boost of it!

From my personal experience on hardware I would steer away from Alienware as a workstation. They are more geared towards gaming. I recommened looking at Dell's Precision workstations.
Cheers!
