Okay I have done this before and for some reason ( issuing for tender in two days) when I import our engineers rvt file into our arch rvt it is not coming in correct. All the grids line up but the levels are off when I cut a section.

The structural model is coming in 6" lower than the previous model from last week. Nothing lines up in section. Am I okay to move it up or is it a problem with their levels??

If you are using linked revit files, you should never be re-importing (re-linking), just re-loading.  Then if the file comes in different, somebody moved their project, either you did or they did.

It doesn't matter what the name of the linked files is using the re-load from function.  So if your original link was named XYZ Struct 6-1-11 and it is now  XYZ Struct 8-1-11 it doesn't matter.

What is the difference between reloading and relinking? I unloaded the current structural and reloaded the new model. The grid lines reference but the levels are off. I hope that I did not move the model down when I loaded. If I aligned their rvt model to our grid lines A and 1 that should not have moved the levels, right?

I think you already found one of the differences between reloading and re-linking - the file can be moved vertically - hrizontally ....

Another big reason is visual control of individual items in the linked file - or dimensions - or tags.  Remove the link and all of these go away and you have to do them again.

And yet another reason is copy monitor.  Did you copy monitor the structural levels and grids or did they C<M yours?

Not sure why you can't see the model.  Is it linked in a workset and is the workset on?

I managed to change the reference from overlay to attach and was able to view the structure. If they send us the desktop file and not their central will this affect the linked model

Instead of unload and then reload ...I Manage Links Under manage links I select the linked file... reload from...etc Where is the re-link? Are you importing the link again?

No ... If you use the manage tab and reload from, then that is the correct process.  You were the one talking about importing instead of re-loading.

We only use overlay for the consultant files so that should not have been a problem.  Using attach will create problems for them when you send them you file because it will want to load their file again on their end.

It really doesn't matter if it is a local copy or the central that they send you.....just a process issue on their end that is bad.
