when I render, it says "0 daylight portals". There are windows in the shot, I double checked the materials which are set to clear glass, I have the setting for sun and artificial light checked, but when I go to the render qualities, the options are grayed out so I cannot click the "daylight portals" option. How do I get these options to be not grayed out?

You'll have to choose a "custom" render settings from the dropdown at the top. Using any of the defaults, draft thru best, they are unchecked.
This will add a lot to your render times, and often isn't necessessary, do a compare and contrast if you have time, so you can judge if the results are worth it to you in the future.
