Can anyone help?
1. I try to open a Revit 2008 project file (34 KB in size), then I get message: "Element 2572688 became corrupt at some time before this session. To continue with this project, save a recovery file. In the recovery file, this element will be deleted to fix the problem."
2. So I hit "OK" after this message and I get the exact same message above "Element 2572688 became corrupt..," so I hit "OK" again.
3. This time I am immediately booted out of Revit (Revit closes). Doesn't seem like a recovery file was saved. Looking at my project folder, a recovery file was indeed saved, but it is only 12 KB in size.
4. Just to follow-through, I try to open the 12 KB recovery file and I get the message: "An invalid file handle was associated with <my project file name and full directory displayed>."
5. I hit "OK" and nothing happens.
The file I am trying to open/ recover has a lot of hours invested and all of my backups yield the same results. Am I simply out of luck or is there a way to somehow "fix" the file? Not sure what this cryptic "Element 2572688" is or if there is anyway to find out what it is. The project has a linked AutoCAD file associated with it. I initially thought that this file was the corrupt "element," but I can open this file just fine in AutoCAD and when I run an "audit" on it in AutoCAD it yield no errors.
Any help you can offer is much appreciated. Peace.

a revit project cannot be 34kb in size.
Do you mean megabytes? If it is indeed kilobytes, you have larger problems than corrupt elements -- you have no elements.

oh, whew. Well that's a relief. I don't remember the 2008/2009 interface well, but you SHOULD be able to audit a file upon opening. If you open revit, and browse to open your file, when you have it selected, there should be a checkbox for "audit file." Auditing isn't a bad first step. It'll check out a file for errors and possibly make it possible to open again.
I've had two elements get corrupt over the last coupel years, and they're a real pain in the curse to track down.

Tried opening the Revit file with the "Audit" boxed checked. It removed the nasty "element" and opened the file completely repaired! Yeah!
Now why didn't one of those cryptic error messages mention that?

I'm having a similar issue in Revit Arch. 2010:
1. I tried to open a Revit 2010 project file (119 MB in size, workshared), and I got this message: "Element 2403047 became corrupt at some time before this session. To continue with this project, save a recovery file. In the recovery file, this element will be deleted to fix the problem."
2. I hit "OK" after this message, and Revit immediately closed; no recovery file was saved.
3. I went through the Restore Backup process and have saved a new central file. I've audited this file twice.
4. I attempted to select the element by its ID; I was hoping it'd been deleted in the auditing process, but it's still present in the file. The error message I get reads "The following Element IDs can't be selected in this mode: 2403047."
Is there another way to select an element when you only know it's ID number? Is there anything else I can do to prevent this element from corrupting the entire file?
Any help / suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks so much!

If you have audited the file and it opened, it sounds like your file is fixed.
Finding elements by their number can be very hard. You might be in the wrong view or the element may be a sketch element.
To find elements, try a 3D view first with all 3D items on. If it is a 2D element, you would have to be in the correct view. And if it is a sketch element .... good luck.

Thanks, WWHub - hopefully it is fixed!
I guess I'll just be on the lookout for that ID in any subsequent error messages. . .
