Is there a way to create a 'text' conditional formula where the color of a component changes color if it not of the same category as rest?

for example: all 2x4 light fixtures type b show red on my floor plan, but if someone makes a duplicate of that same fixture and calls it type c then it automatically changes to a different color.

From the HELP: > Conditional statements can contain numeric values, numeric parameter names, and Yes/No parameters.  <<<< NOTE:  Text is not listed.

Beyond that, A family can not "read" what is in a project.  There is one exception and that is the very limited reporting parameter available in some hosted instamnces.

As WWHub said, you won't be able to do what you want inside the family. However, you should be able to do with V/G and filters inside your project.
