- We do not render in revit. And we dont need to.

- Real time orbiting runs smoothly and is great!

But opening some files (30mb) takes almost a minute. (I know, it is probably opening linked files but still)

And shifting views starts to be really annoying to wait few seconds until it opens.

Any tips on what should we upgrade to get better response timings? Here is our specs:

Win7 ultimate 64Bit

HDD RAID-0 (delivering an minimum of 150mb/s)

i7 860 2,8ghz 4cores (but we can see that revit rarelly uses more then one core)

8GB RAM (its always more then half available)

VGA - 1GB ATI HD4800 series(of course all drivers are up to date)

Smile Thanks in advance

No magic bullet here... that I can see.  Your specs are fine.

Does your computer perform sluggishly with any other programs?

What manufacturer?  That's a rhetorical question I guess because all major manufacturers include copious bloatware.   I always comb the installed programs and the startup list for things I can disable or uninstall.

Your PC seems more than adequate, i have a similar system & issue here but have narrowed mine down to data transfer rates over our network from our server. When i run the same large files with many links locally load/save times are majorly reduced. Our only fix here is to upgrade our aging server, can be a very pricey fix tho...

Knowing there is nothing to do is even more frustrating Sad

Yes, I see, its probably the external links. But once they are loaded shouldnt they remain in the local RAM? There should be a way to configure this! Maybe Revit keeps on reloading the external links in order to check for updates?! Is there a way to order Revit to never reload external links until I ask for it? But I want revit to load then once, when I onpen the file and then never again. This would keep all the operations LOCAL.

I am thinking of changing the Network in the office from LAN100 to LAN1000. Do you guys have any experience with this? Does is boost it somehow?

I take it your files are saved on a server -- this is just a workstation on the network?

Then yes, gigabit lan will help a bit. especially if you have more people working on your network.  100 Megabits per second translates to 12.5MB per second, max, with a physical Ethernet cable.  If you're using wireless, your actual throughput could be a fraction of that.  This would only partially explain the minutes it takes to open your files and views, however.   You mentioned linked files... to what extent have you used them?

Your specs are similar to what recommend for our office, although we recommend more RAM.

SSD's and really fast networks are the only things that will speed up your file opening.

We recently did a very similar upgrade from a 10/100mb swith to a gigabyte switch & the difference was marginal at best. This is how I've narrowed the problem to our server. I'd like to know if anyone else has recently updated their server & noticed any improvement?

Our server is running dual 2ghz CPU's, 3gig RAM, raid array drives & 32bit windows server. I'd like to upgrade to a 64bit server with loads of RAM as I think this will help performance.

Will be easier to justify the cost if I know it will fix the loading/saving times.

I had almost the exact problem and the specs on your computer are pretty much idendical.  I'm running 2012.

Under the options,  go to graphics and make sure that Hardware Acceleration and Anti-Aliasing are unchecked.

I don't think it will.  We've got an old 32 bit server almost identical to yours, and we don't have the problems you describe.
