well, you could make a model-in-place family (a void) in the ceiling category that cuts a channel out of your ceilings. Do you have a rope light family to use? because that sounds complicated.

i am not sure how well light-source families work within nested families, but you could try nesting a couple of families together (line-based generic model, light source, ceiling-hosted generic model) to get an all-in-one solution.
If you are not familiar with family editing, you might check Autodesk seek to see if there is any content there, as well as the Revitcity.com download section.
The get-it-done-now solution itsmyalterego suggested will work fine. Just make sure you select the right category (maybe your ceiling is actually part of your floor slab.)
As for a rope-lighting family, you can probably just modify the light-source family to mimic a rope-light effect.
