Using revit 2011. Why do I get an error message when trying to load a component "stating incorrect category?"

This is not a problem when I use a family from the generic menu.

When you use the load command from a specific tool (furniture, plumbing fixture, etc.) Revit expects the family you are loading to be in that category because it is then going to try to place that family. If you load a family with the generic load family command Revit doesn't care about the category because it's not going to do anything with it after loading the family.

I now understand this. However, I still have a problem. I'm trying to import a planter which is in the site category. Apparently since there are no items in this category in the pull-down, one gets the error message. So how can one get something in the pull-down in the site category?

To load misc families into your project, go to the insert tab.  Then load family.

Revit won't have any preconceptions about what category of family you're trying to load -- it won't care.

as a general advice, is good to have a direct access of the library of families ,a thumbnail of them, and a very organized folder structure.
