Dear Revit Friends,

When I create an object through the command "Modelling-> Create.." I cannot find the way to change the material and therefore the render appearance of the object. For example I created an irregular column and when I rendered it, it come out black.

I selected the object and clicked Edit, then Family Types and I added a parameter of Material/Finishes. I selected Yvory Matte Paint. I've also changed the Parameters -> Graphics -> Coarse Scale Fill Color from Black to White. Again the column appears black when I render the room.

Is there a solution or do I need to redraw it as a proper family object?

Thanking you in advance,

AMM

i may not understand what your saying exactly, but when you select your in place family and select the edit funtion, you then need to select the geometry itself, once selected you can apply a material in its instance properties. if that makes sense...

Every piece of geometry that you create,... extrusions, sweeps, revolves, etc... can have materials assigned to them.  Families have a couple layers, ya know.

So there's a family, you edit the family, it grays out the rest of your project, and enables you to select and edit the basic individual geometries of your family... deeper still, you can edit sweep paths, and profiles, etc... But it's at this top level that you want to select your extrusions and sweeps, and give them materials.  There's a box over in properties called "material" and you can change it there.  Odds are it's set to "default."

If you're concerned that it's not rendering, you have to change that in the materials manager.  That's a whole different process.  You have to assign a pattern to the material, and by default, many of the materials that you have in your project do not actually have a render material associated with them.

It's easy to give them a shading color though. You can just pick a random color for your materials from, you know, 13 million or whatever.

Also, the coarse scale fill color or whatnot, that's not necessary for what you're trying to do.

i hope I'm understanding your question.

Thank you very much!

Yes that was the problem, you are right. I was trying to apply the material to the object as a whole while I had to Edit the Solid forms that compose my Column (i.e. the solid extrusion of the base and the Solid Revolve of the the column shaft) individualy and assign the material to each one of them seperately.

Thank you!

AMM
