Hi -- I saw your message in the chat room, missed it though.  The problem is that when you import a family into your project, it's going to bring in new materials, and it's also going to use materials in your own library if there are duplicates in the naming.  So if you have a material called "Paint, Metallic Red", and your car family also has "Paint, Metallic Red" your project wins, and if your material is a default gray, the car is going to render that way.

Many default materials do not have their render settings set yet, even if they having a shading color.  So it can be deceptive.  Soooo, if you want to know what the materials of your car are, you might open up the family, and check out the different pieces.  Then make sure to go back to your project and modify those materials with a real render material.

Also, some family makers are SMART, and add a naming convention to their models, like LANDCRUISER_Tires, LANDCRUISER_Windshield, and so all the materials of an imported model are unique, and grouped together in the materials manager.  See if that's the case with yours.
