hey
Have a few questions. Im Rendering out a image of a exterior building with 20 RPC plants/ trees, 10 different RPC cars and a few RPC people. on revit 2010
Quality Settings
Resolution quality= High
Outputting setting = Printer
DPI = 275 +
Resolution = 3798x2216
Scheme - Exterior sun only
Style = Sky few clouds
Haze = Clear
Now first questions
1) I can not get a image to render out at anything higher than 250 DPI. Is it the Resolution quality? or DPI value? or both??? The amount of time it takes is not a issue. or maybe it is. 200 DPI takes 1 hour 13mins.
2) when I can get the images to render out I have a slight gray haze on the image. how do i fix that with the above settings to get rid of haze?
3) what output image type should i use?? TIFF?
4) is there a txt file that spits out rendering info like object count, etc settings? I know that Maya does this.
5) should I really be using 3d S max design for high output images for a a low end workstation? FYI we dont have that program.
Here are some of the specs of my work station pc
CPU = Core2duo = 2.4
Ram = 4 gigs
OS = windows xp 32bit
files storaged on server and this project is workshared but no one is syncing with central during offhours

contrary to popular belief- 3Ds Max does not make a rendered
image better looking than revit- (IMO).. that could have
something to do with the fact that both programs have the
exact same rendering machine built in..
i once seen where i couldn't get the DPI past a certain
amount.. but i don't do high resolution so i don't remember
what it was.. (if high resolution looks so good- why doesn't
everyone buy Blu-ray?) and i know some people that wouldn't
want their face viewed in high resolution.. lol.. again- IMO..
gray haze? try lowering "Mid Tone" in "Adjust Exposure"..
try 0.76
TIFF is old and bulky and prints so slightly better that you
almost can't see the difference- and you won't get any
rendered background with it.. JPEG is the best all-around..
i haven't seen any render info spit out lately but it must
be there somewhere..

no clue why it posted my answer 3 times. But I havent used much of 3ds max design lately. Revit and 3ds max could have the same render engine but but. 3ds max from what I remember years ago that you could "bake" the lighing/shadow into the object texture so when you do a walkaround "without any object animation" your rendering would be super fast. Can you do that with 3ds max design???? I have no clue.
The renderings we are doing are for large prints like "Arch D" 24x36 and "Arch E" 30x42 size prints with post-pro into photoshop.
So I have this book "mastering Autodesk Revit architecture 2011" and on page 1022-1023 they talk about Rendering an animation farm and I have seen online websites that have ripped the same info from this page. They talk about the idea but no program that does a render farm server. they show a photo of a program on page 1023 but the image so burrly you cant tell if its a program for revit "which I think not" or some other type of render farmer server program. I wish Project Neon on Autodesk labs was for Revit and not Autocad 3d.
FYI I have a degree in Multimedia Animation in Maya if anyone has a questions I might??? try to help out. But Revit is kindof new to me but no newbie.

that's the idea of going into 3Ds Max with a revit project-
for animation.. and yes the render farm system is what
you need for rendering thousands of frames.. but for
one image- revit looks just as good- IMO..
rendering to construction document size paper doesn't
make sense to me but you can do it..
a lot of people think Photoshop improves the rendered image-
i think it's just trade-offs with image performance.. i don't
use it..
keep in mind that revit is a virtual construction and documentation
program.. although since autodesk recently added a front-end
conceptual design program- the artists have been coming to
revit like a flock of birds..
also- 3Ds Max and 3Ds Max Design are the exact same program..
that's just more of autodesk manipulating the market..

3ds Max and 3ds Max Design are not the same program. They have different tools bundled with them. Thats like saying Revit MEP and Revit Arch are the same thing. Such bad info and advice. Joker with a machine like yours I would be rendering basic materials with low amounts of reflection, ditch the RPC (rpc seems so hard to get a good exposure level with) and then add landscape with Photoshop. oh and for the background just use a solid color and export to PNG, this eliminates the "alpha" layer which is the sky image. Then you can just drop one in with photoshop.

3Ds Max design is for design visualization- 3Ds Max is for Media & Entertainment.
They are exactly the same software, one program, two boxes.
at the revit city gallery since the release of RAC 2009- RPC landscapes
have outnumbered Photoshop landscapes 50 to 1.. not that i think one
is better than the other- but you can be less of an artist placing RPC
elements vs. painting a landscape with Photoshop..
nobody is giving bad advice but the trolls.. at revit city we give our
answers and state our views.. the readers decide for themselves..

wow I wish I could agree with both of you but I havent used 3d s max design yet. So I cant disgree or agree with both comments.
So our client asked us to make a video of the whole building about 450 frames. I had to lower setting and DPI and got it to work. I had to use 5 machines and it took about 18 hours. Due to each machine has different specs I had to split up the output frames depending on the machine and the offhours from 5pm to 730am (about 13 hours) so I can use my coworkers workstations. What I did was I setup each workstation with its own folder server for the output files to dump into overnight. Now maybe its a setting I for got to change but I have a huge issue if I do this again in the future due to time. The next morning I come in and each workstation output folders dump files start with(for example)
workstation 012/finalfront0001.jpg
workstation 015/finalfront0001.jpg
workstation 014/finalfront0001.jpg
workstation 013/finalfront0001.jpg
workstation 016/finalfront0001.jpg
I had to rename 4 out of the 5 files in each folder. That was about over 300 files I had to rename so I can take it into Quicktime pro to make a mp4. Anyone has fix to fix this issue in the future?
