Our firm is taking over the interior fit out of an existing building. We have the exisitng arch model, structural model and the "as-built" model for MEP. This is new for us and I was hoping someone on this forum has been through a similar project and had a workflow or at least a suggestion for a starting point.
I wasn't sure if it would be best to link the MEP model into our own and copy only the pieces we would need to change for the new fit up. Or would it be better to just start with the "As-built" model?
Thanks for your help!

Not sure what you are doing ... "interior fit out" ? Are you doing interiors?
Keep everything as links wherever possible. Then work only in your model.

After reading your post, then re-reading mine I realize I was moving too fast for my own good when I wrote it. Sorry for that. We have been given an as-built model which we need to build from or add to. The as-built model was done out of house by the contractor. I was unsure how best to move forward as we will more than likely need to revise some of the information contained in the as-built model (as it it represents existing information). If it is a link, I can only manipulate how it looks in my model correct? And this leads to my earlier question.

First task: Change the name of your as builts/existing phase. Most likely, everything was lumped together on new construction, I recommend changing this to something meaningful, like "As-Builts". I use whatever the project's name is, so if we were doing an OR remodel, I'd name the phase containing that construction as "OR Remodel".
Create your file, and like wwhub said, link everything in. Change your new construction phase to describe your current project, and create previous phases as necessary to match what you had in the existing condition(s), OR just map all the linked files to the existing phase (look up phases to figure out how to do this).
Since you were focused a little more on MEP, I'm assuming you are an MEP firm, If this had been your old work, I'd say use the old central file, but I NEVER use other people's work because it usually comes with issues. Thus, keep an archived version to revert to if necessary of the existing models, and copy peices over as you need to from the existing files.
If you are probably going to do work on this site again at some point in the future, then I recommend rebuilding the existing in your own file. (The exception to this is if the model is actually a really good model, well done, and with few to no errors... in which case, just use their central file, change the new construction phase to indicate it is an existing condition, then create a new phase for your new construction. If they were kind enough to have provided sheets in the model also, then all you should have to do is make sure that all your views are set to show the proper new phase).
Hope this helps, got a little rambly in there...

You can individually turn off linked items in views.
If this is in essance a renovation, and you are working in MEP or Arch - especially if MEP... Then I would use that model but place everything existing in an existing workset and in an existing phase. (For MEP, you will need those elements in order for your model to work. ) The other files should remain as links. Now do your work in a different workset and new phase.
