hello guys my name is tim and a new user of revit and a new member of this site. going to my issue, when i create a wall or a floor it seems that whenever i duplicate or even a new floor most of the finishes are the same>.

for example i will create a floor for the bed room with a finishing of tiles>say colored blue, then when i will create a floor with a finishing of wood on the other room it will show a wood finshed room>. but when i will change that to tile for example it will copy the finished property of the bed room , but not the new finish that i will be using, and vice versa >> even if i will create a new floor with a tile finish it will still copy the properties of the bedroom floor>> can you please tell me what error i am doing>>

That's because they have the same "name", you can copy the floors like you did but before you change anything "Duplicate" and give it a new name then you can change the materials like you want.

its still doing the same >> i think i really dont know what im doing wrong>> i do try to duplicate it but once i'll go and change the finishing material other materials will also change >>

example > i crated a wall 9 i used generic wall 8" ) then i will click on duplicate and rename it, after that when i will check on the properties its just the structure property but no finishing or whatsoever>> but once i will add say finishing1(stone , ashlar type) other walls will copy the property of the new wall, and vice versa>Winking this always happens when i will do another project.. i dont really know but i think something is wrong ( either on the procedure/steps im doing or could be software related)

You are creating different walls but they appear all to be using the same material.  Pay attention to what Typhoon told you.  Create a new material for each finish you want.

good morning, its been a while since i visited this educational site> ok going straight to my issue. i did follow all the steps typhoon told me. but still having some problem.i included some pictures so at least you guys will be able to know if what im doing is wrong.

picture1:as you can see, the building walls and columns have the same finishing, same with texture, (which earlier, was not suppose to be, the original color of my columns are suppose to be chocolate brown.but when i already drew the walls columns copied the finishing material which is beige.which i did not change on the column finishing) so what i did was to open another component(column and duplicated it and named it hey column)

picture2: i edited the material, when i opened the material editor i chose PAINT colored chocolate brown(applied it checked settings etc.

picture3:i placed the column on the designated grid(still doing fine)

picture 4 or 5 : i checked the 3d view and now the whole building is chocolate brown.

so going back: i am i doing something wrong ?>> because everytime i duplicate a material(say wall or floor)if i will use the material editor under the label TILE or PAINT the rest of the materials will absorb the finishing material>> the only time i can get different material is if for example i will duplicate and rename a wall and i will use a different finishing like stone or any material that i did not use before.

i tried another column using a stone(that did not interfere with the walls

It sounds like you are not duplicating a material, you are duplicating an element.  Walls floors ceilings are all build up in layers and the materials are assigned to each layer.

Architectural columns will assume the material of any wall that they touch.
