I created a solar PV panel family with an image set in the Render Appearance tab of the materials dialog (shown in the window on the right in the attached image. In the family, the image displays properly in realistic visual style. When I insert the panel into a project (window on left in the attached image-this is a blank project with nothing but the panel), the panel is gray in realistic visual style and in the rendering. Phasing is set properly and all other appropriate settings seem to be OK. In the full project where I'm trying to use the panel, all other elements render properly. Any help will be appreciated.

Have you cheked into the actual model if the materials have the right parameters- sometimes/always revit does not transfer the data applied from the family editor to the project
If you used array and you attacked the parameters after arraying, then the arrayed parameters are not transpfering.
What you could do is create a single square as an independent family and the load it into another family to array the size and numbers you want. Just make sure you make the parameters editable. I think after loading the single box family into the main faimly, revit will see it as a group and you can edit the parameters in thereor add extra parameters.
Hope that helped

If the item is grey, then you have not set the materials. "The Project Rules" Once a material is set in the project, any changes in the family don't matter.

try setting your view to show complete instead of previous and new that will show the materials assigned to a linked file.
