Hey guys First post here so bare with me. I'm currently in my 3rd semester as a architectural technologist and our main work tool is revit. I've had abit of experiance with revit and consider myself above average in terms of ability. I have been given the task of creating a modular based housing system and had the idea that i could create my own model that could be used as a template. this could be adjusted in terms of length height etc... It would basically be a steel frame in the shape of a match box, with the ability to add studs, lintils, doorways, windows etc... I'm sure this is possible It's just that every metric family i've tried to create it in lacks the tools needed to complete the task. It needs to be complex with just about everything able to adjust on the fly without going into the family editor to change perimiters, I needthe end result to be basic to work with so that other people can use it too. So can anyone point me in the right direction as to which tool/family/concept model etc... i should use to start creating this? I'll keep hacking away but a little guidance would be much appreciated...... Regards Chris

OK so I'm either not making myself clear enough or what i'm asking is impossible well if it is it is i guess but it makes logical sense to me anyways :D I'll try once more and be abit more specific and if tht dont work ill just make a group. I have to make a housing system based on basic blocks (just like lego) 3200mm x 10800m. I wanted to create a type of "family" like one would do if one was creating a window family etc.. that could be edited to swap out materials ie: Wooden beams instead of metal etc... plywood sheathing instead of plasterboard and so on. I thought that i could do this in concept mass at first but it doesnt account for the specific material sturctural components, so i tired in complex frames/trusses and well i cant get the metal beams to join at the ends etc... the tools in that modling arent the same. So i guess im left with making a house in a normal project and then just selecting the whole thing and making a group? I would of really liked to just have a metal structure that could be used as a template for everyone that in the end was easially editable. Maybe i need to go into revit structure I'm not sure, but from what i have seen of structure it has even less construction tools than normal revit.(apart from all the analasys stuff) anyways if anyone has any good ideas please post em maybe through some benign comment I might have a flash of inspration.......... Thanks Chris

You don't want a family, you want a group. The group is transportable between projects, can be edited and re-saved as a different group or just edited. In that group, you can edit size, materials, elements ...including new, removing or swapping them out.
