Hello. I've been doing a simple interior rendering of a kitchen. I can't get the wood on the cabinets to change, no matter what. I've changed the material on it several times, but it always shows up as a birch color, no matter if I specify walnut, tigerwood, whatever. Any help is appreciated! thanks.

Sorry. Yes, I go the materials definition. For instance, a material that is defined as wood, I change that parameter (is that the right word?) under the render appearance. For instance, I can pick a walnut wood, a tigerwood, or birch wood as the definition, and no matter how many times I render it, it always shows up as a birch type wood. I checked the casework to make sure it has the correct material definition and it does. I've tried creating my own material as well and it still doesn't work.

Did you do this inside of family editor and load it back to the project? or you did this directly inside the project?

I did this directly inside the project. When I changed the render definition, I used the predefined images that came with Revit. I should also mention it changes the color in the a shaded image, but not when I use the render function.

I looked at the family and seems like there are 5 different types in the same family You need to make sure each type has the material assigned to it whether you did this step inside the family editor or the project. If in the project, you can select the family and goes to the "type" properties and assigned material. that should fix your problems. Philip

OK, just double checked. The family is correct. But I'm still having the same problem. If I change the material definition of say "wood" in the rendered appearance to a different wood, it doesn't change colors at all. It changes in simple shaded version of a rendering, but not when I use the render function. Does that make any sense?

My suspiousion is that if you ever tied (or the right word "associate" the material to the family, based on the family you uploaded, you never did update the material to the family, you can't just change the material under the materials dialog box without associating the material to the "material" parameters in the family. Make sense?

Hmmm, I think I understand. But I believe I did that. Here's what I did. The family has the "wood" material associated with it. I changed the the material definition of "wood" using manage, materials. If I change the defintion to say, a very light wood, it changes color in the simple shaded version of a 3-d. However, it DOES not change when I hit the render function. Maybe I'm using incorrect terminology and I apologize for that. I hope it's something simple that I've left out because it's driving me nuts! Thanks.

Hmm.. it sounds like you did everything correctly. one other thing you can check is that the "material" you associate with it is the actual type you put it in the project, there are 5 different types and have you tried checking the type you USE has the RIGHT material? just my hunch...

Here is another thought, maybe when changing the material in the family types editor the apply button was not clicked for each type? I have found myself changing type parameters and forgetting to "apply" them. Although you stated the shaded view changes but not the rendering... hmmm. oh the joys of Revit's idiosyncracies. I wish you success in figuring this one out. I know it would be time consuming but maybe reset and start over with only one type, then process through to making the other types once the main type works the way you want it to? -Mark
