Is there a way to set the default view depth for new views? How does Revit determine this?

For as far as I know REVIT takes the extends of your building. I'm not aware of a way to change this to another default.

View depth for new plan views, or rcp plan views...not sections or details.

It should be set by the default view template. Look up view templates in your Help, it should set you on the right track.

Round and round we go. And how does Revit determine the default view template? Please do not refer me to help, I have already been there. What I would like, is for the view depth to default on new-view creation.

in your default template file you will have to assign a Default View Template to the view, the default is none. this is done in view properties for the View. In the Template View you create to use as as default, you can set the Default View Range information. Save this as your default Template file and you should be good to go when you create a new file or view.

Understood, but... How do I assign a default view template to newly-generated views. I don't want to apply the view template to every view. I want it applied automatically when a new view is generated. Again, how does Revit determine the default view template for newly generated views?!?!?!?!

Right click on a view and apply a view template. In the dialog box where you pick a template, there should be a check box to apply that template to new views.

" i don't think you are understanding. in the properties of a view is a setting called Default Template View. By default this is set to none. becuase this is set to none, revit applies the system defuaults values for view range info. as long as this is set to none, whenever you create a new view Revit will only apply the default system values for views of which View Range info is included. That is how Revit deterimes the default view template for newly generarated views.

When you have set up your View Template, simply click the "Apply automatically to new views of same type"-button

Hi, I'm revisiting this issue because I'm having a problem. I'm in Revit Structure 2012 and I want any newly generated Wall Section and Building Section View to have some properties which are different from the default, such as 3/4 scale, Fine detail level, clipping depth of 1', crop region not visible, etc.
Then I followed TKennedy's instructions by clicking on a Wall Section View in my template file, adjusting the properties to match above, right-clicking in the Browser to create a VT from View and hit OK (even though the latter two of the above four properties weren't shown as an option). Then I cut a new WS, right-clicked in Browser to Apply VT, selected the VT and checked the box, and hit OK. This new View had the 3/4 and the Fine, but not the other two changes (as expected because they weren't shown in the View Template Properties).
Then I cut a new WS and it goes to Fine but stays at 1/8 scale! It got one but not the other! The other two properties stayed at default as expected. However, the Default View Template lists my newly created VT! Am I missing something?

I could not follow your question completely but let me explain a few things.
The term default is very miss-leading. When you create a view, it will use the view template you set for these types of views, however, no template is assigned to the view. Look at the view properties and Default View Template will be blank.
Now, if you fill in this view property and assign a view template, nothing happens! You have to find the view in the browser and right click - apply default view template.
Please be aware that this template is only applied when you tell Revit to do so. So, someone can change the view properties. That might be what you want but if someone applies default view template to the view, it will change to those settings.
This is what you want! Prior to printing, we hold down the shift key and select all the sheets in our browser, right click and pick apply default view template. Every view on every sheet that has an assign view template will be shown correctly. That means if you do need to change a setting, you need to either remove the assigned template or assign a new one based on what that view needs.
This is a great tool if you learn to use it.

Thanks for the reply. I understand all of that and I think you are mistaken on one thing. In my previous post, in the final paragraph, I noted that the newly created View listed the newly created View Template as its Default View Template in the Properties palette. So it did assign the new View Template, but not all of the properties of the new View Template (because the scale is still 1/ ! How can that be?
Almost all of our projects are buildings and when we cut sections we want them to be at 3/4" scale, immediately. If a section requires a different scale, we could change it. It is very annoying that you can't set the default scale of a new section view to be 3/4". I know I can go through and change them to 3/4, and I know I can do it in blocks with the Shift button, but I guess what I'm saying is I'd rather not have to. And it SEEMS like Revit has provided a way to do that, with the procedure that TKennedy outlined, but for some reason, for me, it's not working. I've seen this come up in other forums as well, so maybe it's a programming issue.

You seem to be correct. The initial view does not have the correct scale but when you follow my process and apply the default view template, the scle is now correct.
This test was in 2011
