I have just created a new column family [architectural - no structural constraints] - I created the family using a Revit Metric Template base - set up the columns length and width with ref planes and left its lower and upper level elevational ref planes in place. I have successfully imported the new column family into my project - placed the columns BUT WHEN I TRY TO ATTACH THE COLUMNS TO THE SLOPING ROOF THEY DO NOT EXTEND VISUALLY -NNB Instance Properties says they are attached and give a value to the increase in length/height of the columns that varies depending on where the column hits the sloping roof. WHY ARE THE COLUMNS NOT VISUALLY EXTENDING TO THE ROOF? This occurrs in all elevational type views ie: section/elevations and 3D.

Your extrusion is set to a fixed length, if you look at the stock columns, they go level to level.

Thanks - I have extended the column so it is touching both LEVELS in Elevation Views [I assume that is what you mean by 'my' column being set to a fixed length?] and I have also added two new parameters OFFSET TOP and OFFSET BASE as per the Custom 150mm Diameter Round Column. These are grouped under DIMENSIONS and their Type is LENGTH. The value for both parameters has been set to 0.00. I have reloaded the family into the project and overridden the existing family. Unfortunately the column extends but still does not display visually as having done so. I am missing a trick or the bleeding obvious?? Thanks again for your response

Although I am a firm believer in learning how to use Revit, sometimes you are better off to start with something that works and modify that. Does a stock concrete structural column work? If so, open that family, save it to a new name, edilt the profile of the solid to your shape and change the material. DONE! Don't mess with anything else and don't delete the solid - just edit the profile sketch!

First off, the offset top and offset base value inside your family are useless since you didn't associate any parameters inside your column family. Second, there is a system "instant parameter" for column family where you can change the offset (for top and base) value in the project environment. Also, under the properties for the column family inside the project, there is "field" called "attachment justification" under construction, if you choose "Intersect Column Midline", that might get you what you need to do to attach to the roof ...
