We are using Structure 2011. How can wall sections from the architectural model be converted to a drafting view in the structural model? The only answer I have seen states to export to AutoCAD and import into our model. Surely there is a better way! Please Help!

If you want a drafting view, then the method you describe is correct. But why do you want a drafting view when model views are so much better?

It would be nice to model in all conditions, but we simply do not have time/money to model in every nail, plate, weld, etc for all conditions around the building. Our most efficient efforts would be to use the architect developed wall sections, then manipulate - but it sounds like Revit isn't that productive just yet.

I don't think you understand the Revit way yet. You start with a model view and add detail components. Sometimes you turn off an element. This might be especially tue if you don't own it. Most times, your detail components will include a masking region where that is required. When we include structural model elements in our views, we might over-ride graphics and change those to halftone elements. You might want to do that with your linked architectural model.

Thanks for the input. My comment, however, is still the same - modeling takes more time, and does not offer a benefit to those building the building especially if you are modeling only at the location the wall section is cut. Believe me, I really am trying to understand the Revit way, but I have merge it with the profitability way!

" What do you feel is not efficent about this method. if this is what you want to do, this would be a quick method. Also as WWHub said, you are not modeling. you are bascially 2d drafting over the top of a rough model view. there's very little modeling involved.

" but it sounds like Revit isn't that productive just yet" ... oh my! wrong place to post that! haha I use drafting views for some typical connection details on a re-occuring simple product line my company produces. The first time I used Revit for this product, I modeled it really well then used the Add-on feature "freeze drawing" which converted it to 2d linework. You could do this in Architect, then in Structure use "insert view from file" button under the Insert Tab. Be careful with this though, your losing all the benefits of modeling in 3D so if something changes, you'll have to change all these silly drafting views! good luck.

Is the problem that you are not seeing the architectural walls? and need to draw your own? When you import walls from the architect they will usually have the "structural usage" set at non-bearing and they will not show up on a structural model. You will need to change the discipline to “coordinate” to see them. Select the ones you want and change them to a structural type (bearing, shear or structural combined). Make sure you change the disapline back to structural or it will mess up the way that some components look.

I really cringe when I see comments like this on here.
