Hi everyone,

I am new to the forums and Revit Architecture. I hope to learn more about Revit Architecture as I am undertaking it for a project.

Currently, I am having an import problem, what happens is that during the import, it seems all the layers combine into one single unit. Is this what is supposed to happen or is there a feature, in autocad, that locks the layers as 1 unit?

Please assist me in the following issue that I have with importing.

Thank you

Your image really doesn't tell us anything.  We don't know what we should be seeing.

Imported CAD drawings keep their layer settings and it is one object.  Were you wanting to edit it?  If so, I suggest you edit in CAD.  You could explode it in Revit and then it can be edited but that can have bad consequences and should be avoided unless you clean up the drawing first.

Hub is right, imported or linked, the layering structure stays intact.

Your image looks like you just selected the imported instance and in that case, it will act as one element...much the way an xref does in CAD. If you want to see the layering, select the import and on the ribbon, select Query. That will allow you to select the individual lines and blocks to see what layer they belong to.

As a side note, it is generally bad practice to import a CAD file into your live project. Imports will add their entire file size to your model vs. a link where the file size impact in minimal. Also, imports can be exploded to be worked on as Hub said, this can have some undesired affects on  your file. Generally, it is better to link in the CAD file into a live project. If you want to import, explode and edit, then import into a blank project and "revitize" everything and then you can either insert the view (detail and schedules) or copy paste into your live project. Generally I will clean and modify the CAD drawing first and then link it in.

Unrelated, Hub, thanks for the add!

Hi Hub and Brett,

Thank you both for your efficient and prompt reply. Firstly I have to apologise for my unclear attempt at coming across with the problem I face with the importing. Secondly, the link cad thing might be the way to solve my problem.

Lastly, would you both have advice on what I should show instead in my screenshots to provide a clearer picture?

I have tried exploding but the drawing has more then 10000units.
