We are running Revit MEP 2011 and need to change the line types for Plumbing that are below slab to hidden.  Since I found out that Revit isn't smart enough to automatically choose to make the pipe hidden our plumbing designer has to manually do this.

My question as well as his is why are there line styles listed in <> and others not?

Whats the difference between <Hidden> and Hidden Lines, just to name one specific instance?

Just wondering,

Response:

here is the way I understand it. <Invisible> and other similar linestyles are System Linestyles and can be edited, but not deleted. They are like that little stain in your favorite workshirt. The one that can't go away, but you continue wearing the shirt despite that. They are also special in the sense that Revit knows certain <> line styles belong to certain parts of the model automagically, <Room Seperation> and <Space Seperation> for instance. You can not define another line style to be used for Room Seperation lines, but you can modify their appearance through modifying <Room Seperation> line types. In my experience this is usually done to prevent deletion of system dependent types (ever try deleting every single wall type? One must remain!).

Question:

Are the slabs visible in your views? If so have you tried using the "Show Hidden Beyond" tool under the View Ribbon? This allows items that are hidden behind another object (ie: wall, ceiling, SLAB) to be visible via a different line type, I think <Hidden> is used by default but acn be assigned differently.

HTH.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!

I dont see that setting under the View tab.  I'm running Revit MEP 2011, does it have that button?

Thanks for the Info,

You are correct sir. The only other way I can think of achieving this, then, is Lineworks tool:
