Hi, This site was recommended to me to learn something about Revit. I've used Auto Cad since... well just say my first setup was on a 286 with a yellow tinged screen and no mouse at first. You'd be suprised what one can accomplish with the arrow keys and by typing in coordinates. Had a HP 7-color B plotter. I think the math coprocessor cost $400. Anyway, I am currently out of work and many job postings that I see in my area of expertise require experience with Revit, specifically the MEP package. Most of my drawing experience is with device layouts on existing architectural templates and one-line diagrams including schematics. 3D experience is limited to Isometric drawings in 2D space. Although I'm not opposed to attending a class or spending some money on this, I would like to first see what the learning curve involves and thus be able tell a prospective employer how long I think it will take for me to come up to speed. Or if I should just forget it. Some firms offer training, but I don't want to waste their or my time. Guess I could get a book too. I realize the capacity to learn new tricks depends upon the individual, but I won't know until I can get a feel for it. Thanks for any suggestions.

Another good rescource you can look at is www.therevitkid.com. It is a blog where he has a lot of free video tutorials that helped me a lot when I first started, because I am completely self taught as well. It is mainly Architectural based and I know you are looking for Mechanical examples, however it will give you a basic idea of the flow of the program and the type of thought processes you will need. FYI, I have used Autocad since R12, and it took me about 2 months to start getting Contract Documents out the door in Revit Structural. The one piece of advice I can give is to take a few weeks exploring the program with the free trial as Coreed mentioned, before attending any classes. That way, at least you will know what questions to ask, and get the most for your money.

I am 61, I have all three, Arch, Struct, MEP. I started on 2009. My previous experience started in earnest on Acad windows 12 version. All 2D. Revit has a steep learning curve. Site is very helpful. As well as has been outlined above. You may also want to look at YouTube, lots of short vids. I used the basic book that came with it. Go ahead and build a standard project simple at first say a garage. That will get you started and you can move on from there. What you used to draw Acad 2D that is available on Revit at one button. Revit has hundreds of buttons. Good luck. I would never go back.

I just joined revitcity yesterday. There are a lot of good and bad videos on youtube, but I found for 100 bucks you can get up and running with some of these good videos. I have both of these and are very good on covering all the needed stuff to get started. I have the lynda.com CD also and it's great for the price. Reading can be a pita. http://www.lynda.com/home/DisplayCourse.aspx?lpk2=62086 http://www.computer-training-software.com/revit-2010.htm Give them a shot!
