So I am trying to create a bar handrail for corridors in a project. I first created a lone based family so I could snap to autocad drawing imported as a template. works great with one exception, it will not host to a wall so it can move with it. The only solution i have found is to align and lock it to the wall. kind of tedious. So the I tried to nest that family into a wall based family. works except I lose the ability to draw a line on the wall to create the bar that i need. It always comes in as the base length of the bar. is there any way to make this do what I want? Thanks Jaysyn

In the Structural Library there are families for stiffeners etc, that have this capability. That is they will host to a face, as well as be line based. Use one of these families as a base and edit it. I'd have to check but it might simply be a matter of checking a check box to enable this functionality.

Mr Spot, Just curious, I tried to look for the stiffeners family from the RAC library and couldn't find it. Is this kind of family only comes with Revit Structure? to Jaysyn, To get back to the original question, the line based family should now have three options when you first place it in the project, you can choose from place on vertical face, place on face and place on workplane. When choosing place on face, you should be able to host it on the wall like any other hosted family, the catch is you will not be able to place from plan view (I did it on 3D view) so, when the wall moves, the family will move with it. One other thing you need to be aware of is that the ref level of the line based family will be the host face. Philip

Mr. Spot, I would be interested in knowing where to get that base family and if the category can then be changed to furniture or specialty equipment. Phillip, not sure what you mean exactly by your last sentence. Thanks for all your help on this. Jaysyn

Jaysyn, "One other thing you need to be aware of is that the ref level of the line based family will be the host face." What I meant was when you place the line-based family on the wall, the bottom side of the family will be the hosted face on the wall. In a normal situation where (ref level/plan level) will be the bottom face of the family. In you case, when you are trying to make a bar handrail as a line-based, you should create the geometry rotated so that the bottom (the mounting face of the rail) can be hosted on the wall. Hope it explains your question Philip
