I am attempting to create a void family to act as a brick ledge. I started with a floor based generic model template and then created a void extrusion with parameters to control the width and depth of the brick ledge. My problem is how to control the length of the brick ledge once it is in the project file. I can assign a length parameter to the extrusion to change the length, but the new dimension has to be entered each time. Is there a way to have the little blue grips to show up to drag the end of the extrusion to change the length? Is it possible for the floor based family to operate with a start point and end point similar to a beam family? Will reference lines help control the length of the extrusion? I am using RST2011. Thank you

Are you talking about a void cutting a floor edge, a wall or what? It sounds like you want a floor edge sweep. As such, that element will give you grips if you use that rather than a family. You can create face based void families with instance based parameters to control their size just like solid forms.

Yes, I am trying to cut through a floor with my void. Would a sweep function better than an extrusion? To be clear, are you saying that an in-place family will give grips and that a regular family will not? Inside the family editor, the extrusion has the blue triangle grips on each edge, but once in the project environment, they go away. Thanks for the help.

You will get grips if you setup strong references in your family and name your reference planes. For instance, set and name reference planes for Left and Right and constrain the geometry to these. You won't get the grips in 3D but they will show up in perpendicular views. HTH.

From what I can see the requirements for getting grips in a family are: The parameter needs to be an instance parameter, the label needs to be attached to ref planes, and the ref planes have to be set to anything other than "not a reference". They don't have to be named or set to strong, but it's still not a bad idea to do that.
