It still renders this way because that is still how you have it set. I assume this is a Revit roof and not something you created as a family. In the roof properties, you assign a material to each layer. But that material is also assigned its properties in the material editor. Adjust the material there.

i have gone through every propeties box or option i can find but no go. i can change the material to another option with a fixed palette and that will change the colour, but not to any custom colour. all the same, i guess there's more than one way to skin a cat. it almost seems as though there is an underlying aqua/cyan setting somewhere... i can vaguely remember choosing it sometime in the last 24hrs... all i have to do is find it.

select the roof, edit type. first tab; edit structure. This shows the layers of the roof, and the materials you've specified. There are tabs, function, material, thickness, etc. Click on the uppermost material. You'll see a [...] button appear. click on it. It'll take you to the material settings for that particular material. You will be on the graphics tab by default. This is only how it shows in Shading views. One tab over is "render appearance," click on that. Then, choose replace. browse through the variety of materirals!

i'm getting to what looks like the right place, but the 'layer above' and 'layer below' options are not selectable. it's almost as if they have been set and locked somewhere else.

where it says Paint, click on the right hand side of this box. a button will appear that will take you to Paint material. change the render appearance here. have a look through Help under Materials.
