I am assuming that you are speaking of designing form work for poured in place concrete, these must be designed by an engineer for all anticipated loads. Including vertical horizontal, equipment and men, etc. Not a simple task as you may be just realizing.

Hi! i tried this last month but we only get the total surface area for formwork(shuttering)
but hopefully this will help.
for the beam, make a material take off and get the material area, u will notice that the surface area(4sides) of the cut beam by the slab are computed. so u need to make a formula to deduct the upper face attached to the slab because you dont need to put a formwork there.
for slab, do the ssame thing make a material take off and get the material area, u will notice that all the surface of the soffit will be computed. so you need to deduct faces of beams, columns & walls that are attached to your soffit.
