I seem to be having a little trouble working out a pretty basic operation with creating shared parameters in nested families. Please bear with me if this seems painfully obvious. I created a generic family model that has an element for which I want to have the width as a shared parameter. I want to nest this in another generic model family where I want to have multiple instances. I set up the shared parameter as both an instance and a type parameter and, apparently, have successfully loaded it into the other family. But every time that I test to see if I can change the value for the parameter it tells me that the constraint cannot be satisfied and that there is something wrong with the imported family. I'm not sure what I'm missing because I tried to make it as simple as possible. Thanks!

Thanks to you! JAMESHGRIMES site moderator Joined Fri, Apr 14, 2006553 Posts To link parameters from a nested family to the host family you will need to do the following. 1. Open the host family with the nested inserted. 2. Click on the nested family and go to properties 3. Click Edit/New 4. Click the little button at the far right of the parameter line you want to change 5. Select parameter out of list or click add parameter and recereate the parameter. When the parameter is linked there will be an (=) sign on the little button.

What if there is no option to choose the little button?

Sorted it. The children families cannot have shared option ticked under Family Category and Parameters.
