when i try to load some componenets (and it does seem to be random) i get the error message as per the attachment.

can anyone shed any light how i might resolve this??

I would get that error too if I were trying to load a model element while in a detail element load.  Under the annotate, component tab, you can only load detail or annotation families.

This just means your not loading the appropriate file type. For example, if I go the "column" and then "load family" and if I try to select a mechanical device, this message will pop up. For the example you provided, you probably were trying to load a curtain door after going to the 'Door' command. Curtain wall doors are different. You have to make sure your under the right category.
