I know that I can customize my own family by opening it as its own seperate file. But I am curious if there are any other methods to doing so. Can I customize with a different program in import into Revit. A problem I find with the current way of customizing is that it is a time comsuming process.

Revit families can only be developed or changed in the family editor which is integral to the Revit program. A properly desinged family however will let you creat another instance of itself by duplicating, naming it and then changing the parameters that the family contains. For example, a door that has 36" x 7'-0" size but not 36" x 8'-0" size can be made into the larger size by going to the properties of the smaller one, duplicating it and changing the height parameter to 8'-0".
Another option is that 2D and 3D CAD geometry can be brought into a family.
