Is there a way to get face based families placed on walls, such as outlets, to show a generic annotation symbol or text in the plan view? The outlet families provided with Revit Architecture 2010 are wall based and show the annotation symbol just fine in the floor plan when they are placed on a wall. I'm looking for that kind of functionality but with a family that can be placed on a something other than a wall, e.g cabinetry or columns. When making a face based family I am not allowed to place the annotation family anywhere other than on the face provided in the family template. It needs to be placed on a refrence plane perpedicular to that face to be visible in plan. The symbol could be sketched as symbolic lines but that doesn't provide the scalability of an annotation, or the power of text labeling. Thanks for your help.

Old thread but has anyone figured this out!? MEP components have been a pain in my arse since I started using REVIT. I've created awesome families for my architectural models but they are all useless to our Mechanical engineer. All we want is to use wall based components on a linked model!

Altough I don't do this kind of work, I have a possible answer. You do know that you can have multiple tag types for different elements? So if you have a model switch, face based on a wall, you could tag this is plan view using a tag created as a switch symbol. The problem would be I don't think you can narrow the category so that you could just use tag all.

I ended up making work plane based generic models. They don't move with the face they are mounted to but they show properly in the plan (or RCP), interior elevations and perspectives. Would still love to know if Revit has the capability to do what I'm wanting. Tagging the elements is a good idea that I didn't try. It could work however it would be less than ideal if I wanted to dimension the location of the elements on the plan or reflected ceiling plan view, e.g. sconces, speakers or registers. Not impossible though.
