1 Hold down the "Alt" on your keyboard
2. Use the number pad on your keyboard and type 0176
I think that will do it

Well that works too... didn't know about that one.
All these key shortcuts can be found in the windows character map if you ever need to do other symbols:
Ø Alt 0216 is diameter
² Alt 0178 is squared
³ Alt 0179 is cubed
for some of the common ones...

well, the proper degree symbol is alt+0176 in most cases. The others are theta symbols, ordinal indicators, small 0's with lines through them, etc, really the only way to do it is to go to the character map located at start>all programs>accessories>system tools and check it yourself under the correct font that you are using in your project. Sometimes they change according to font. If you have a unique font, this could be the case why it isn't going through. After you have found it you can either copy and paste it, or type the alt+ number. as soon as you release the alt key, it should appear for you.

Just to clarify for laptop users, the ALT+ method will only work if you have a seperate number section of a keyboard. Same thing goes for standard keyboard users, you need to make sure to use the Numbers Keypad not the numbers above the letters. You can also simply use MS Word to insert charachters and copy/paste into Revit text. You can also get to the charmap by going to Windows Start>Run>charmap I include these special characters in a drafting view that is part of our template.

Many laptops have a numeric keypad overlaid on the righthand side of the keyboard, which you access with the Function key, so to enter special characters, you'd hold down both the Function and Alt keys while typing the numeric key code.
