Hello everyone, I am trying to export a surface from civil 3d into revit. I am export a dwg showing all of the triangulation from civil 3d and importing it into revit. The surface looks correct when i import it, the problem comes when i create a toposurface. When i create a toposurface it "simplifies" the surface, all of the detail pretty much gets smoothed out. i.e. curbs just go away.. it seems like revit is not creating breaklines and removing point as it feels. So I guess my question is how do i get a surface into revit without doing this? Is their a breakline tool in revit? can i import a breakline file into revit? I know revit is not a site program by any means, but it seems like i should at least be able to import a surface accurately. I also tried setting my contour interval to .1' in civil and tried importing it like that, it creates a better surface, but it is still far from good.

I attached a couple pictures of the surface in revit and terramodel, hopefully everyone sees what im getting at.

Any help is appreciated.

thanks.

hey fyi autodesk has a add-in called roads and terrain that can import corridors from civil 3d. it is pretty limited, but it can get the job done if what your working on is somewhat simple. Also if you ever want to go from civil 3d to 3ds max design, they have another add-in called dynamite VSP. I have a fair amount of experience going between those 3 programs now, so if you have any questions ask away.

Hi Peter

From what I know revit doesn't have the ability to create breaklines, this should be done in C3D as you have done.  I wouldn't import the contours into revit as it will change the surface, as in the instance with Kerb and Channels it could flatten this out. I would only use the triangle file, this is a true indication of the surface.  If it is deleting points from your surface, that sounds like its creating a "Simple surface"

Hope this helps.

Dan

You could try Eagle points LandCADD Siteworks as it may achieve a better result.  The other option would be to import in parts of the topography separately.  Revit doesn't handle reatining walls or vertical surfaces on topography very well.  So by doing it in parts you will avoid some of this simplification Revit is doing.

Hi Peter,

Just seen your post re; experience going between 3D programs. I have been sent a dwg file by surveyors and am now required by the client to import it into Revit, cut a road into the surface. Iive been trying to figure out how I can manipulate the surface in Revit, by making it a topographical surface. At the moment it's imported as one 'mass' and I'm not having much luck with the manipulation. I wondered if you might be able to shed some light?

Thank you

Charlotte

Follow your HELP on creating a topo surface from a CAD import.  Then you have two possibilities.  Use graded regions or edit the surface adding additional points or modifying the ones there.

NOT A MASS!!!!
