I am having problems finding an easy way with the pattern running vertically.
The effect I am trying to achieve is Norfolk boarding but a composite metal pannel with a vertical profile of 200mm wide, then 50mm wide setback 30mm, for the height of the wall. I expect the solution is straight forward but I cant see it

Thanks for the interest, the attached image shows the required effect. The planks are about 200mm wide by 25mm thick and 50mm apart. They are straight edged.
Shadow is an important part of the design.

Two options,
Apply them as wall sweeps placed vertically...
OR my preferred method use a curtain wall that gives the appropriate pattern...
For instance, a 200x25 mullion could be placed in a system that spaces the grids out at 250mm vertically, then where you windows/doors are, break the curtain system and place a wall to the appropriate thickness (doesn't really matter what wall you use as the window is going to fill the whole section) to act as a host for the window.

I have to say that I would go with curtain wall system as well, would be easier around doors and windows...
