I am hoping someone might know how to make existing phase surface patterns visibilty to turn off in a new construction view (using phase filters) without having to resort to the paint tool. The existing phase overide material seems to have no effect in regards to surface patterns.

You can copy the existing phase item to the clipboard and paste aligned to same place, assign new construction phase to the copy. Duplicate the material, add or remove the pattern in the appropriate copy, then use the demolition tool to demolish the existing item at a demo phase before the new construction phase.

Just change your Phase-exist material to have no surface pattern.... This is the material existing elements used when they are overidden in a phase filter.

Chris, Exactly my point. Phase-exist material overrides existing elements materials used when they are overidden in a phase filter except for the surface patterns which are not overwritten. I'm sure the surface patterns used to be overridden in previous Revit versions but Building 8 and 8.1 retain the element surface pattern. Any futher ideas on how to fix this through visibilty options, not editing the building elements?

Hmm, not looking good. I can hear Keith now...
I can't think of anyway to get around this other than filled regions or duplicate wall types for existing elements that are specially created without surface patterns...
I'd probably go the duplicate wall type method myself. For instance Blockwork-exist and just remove the surface pattern...
Seems like a functionality that we need though...

Does anyone know if this is still the case? (it seems to be). Does anyone have a better workaround than duplicating walls?
