I am trying to create a tag that can vary based on properties from a family in a linked file that I cannot edit. For instance, in the structural file there are different types of structural columns, be it cast-in-place, steel, piers, etc. Is there any way for me to take a parameter from the structural family (most likely the family type) and "translate" it into what I would like it to say on our Structural Column Tag? So when a columns Family Type contains the word "Concrete" my tag could say "CONC. COLUMN RE: STRUCT" or if it contains the words "Wide Flange" it would say "STEEL COLUMN" etc. I've been messing around with the labels and parameters/formulas in the tag family, but it seems like I'm out of luck unless I get the subs to cooperate and add new shared parameters to their families and edit them accordingly. Thanks in advance!

Someone a little more familiar with formulas in tags might know differently, but I'm not seeing how it would be possible to do waht you want. You could get close, and make a tag with two lines of text (one for your conc. note and one for steel), then turn those on and off with a parameter. Then make two types in that family, steel and concrete, and use the appropriate tag on the columns. It wouldn't be any smarter than a text note, but you would have the advantage of the tag moving with the column.

You can not tag objects in linked files.... but you can tag copy-monitored objects in your file.... and structural columns can be copy-monitored. If those objects carry an additional shared parameter, you could have a tag that reads that.

You can tag them in Revit 11. But it seems that if its not *your* file, the feature doesn't help much (unless you have subs with extra time on their hands to fill out custom parameters for you.) I can assign a label that shows parameter values for the linked file's family properties, but for now I believe they can only be verbatim. IE I can have a tag that says the family name or type name or whatever, but it seems there is no way to assign or "link" my own value to their properties, either in the tag family or my revit file.
