I am using Revit 2010.  When modifying a family type that have several solids such as a wall hung shelf, how are portions of the type deleted within one family type but remain in another.  For example, I just downloaded the Shelf_Wall_Unit_3736 Family Type from this web site.  The Family Types dialog box gives me a choice of 32", 16", and 48".  When you select a 16", you get a more narrow shelf but it does not erase the shelves that do not have support at 16" width.  I need get the the area within the family editor where I can completely change the design of the 16" family type without changing the complete family.  Does anyone know how to do this?

The family was not built to do what you want.   Edit the family - save with a new name and make it this smaller size and remove what should not be there.

Or ... fix the family so that it works <<< MUCH HARDER TO DO
