I've been asked to layout a residential plan for 40 foot diameter 5/8's 3 frequency geodesic dome. I found a program that generates the geometry in 3d in a dxf format: http://www.applied-synergetics.com/ashp/html/domes.html and I have a wire frame model in AutoCAD. The geometry does not explode in AutoCAD. If I link the drawing in Revit it disappears. If I import and try to explode it, it disappears. I do this in level 1 view and when I try to see it in 3d, it diappears.
Question 1 - Why I'm I having these problem with this dwg. Why doesn't this generated shape act like other ACAD drawings
Question 2 - Once I place this geometry in Revit, how do I turn it into Revit model? Trace it? Should I create indiviual triangular panels with framing and skin, how do I place them, nothing is plumb. How would I create a triangle panel in the first place?
Should I try to this with Mass and "wall by face"? Modeling "creat in place"? Is this doable, or should I stick to AutoCAD on this one?
Thanks

create a mass family and import your dwg into the family, create walls by face and load it into your project...

I imported the drawing into a new project and went to mass editor. The drawing acts like a block (is that the correct term for Revit?) I can't do "wall by face" because the whole drawing acts like a whole and not the parts. I exploded the drawing and lost all the 3d info? How do I access the individual parts of the imported drawing?
I'm new to Revit, so please excuse me if I miss something from you post.

make a new mass family, not a new drawing... and follow the steps above.
can you send me the file, I will have a look at it when I get some time.. wishful thinking

Wow, that's impressive. When I imported the drawing, the mass family took on the geometry automatically. Now I assume I load the new mass into a new project and proceed to wall by face. Your previous post said to: 1 create family, 2 import dwg to family, 3 walls to face, and 4 load into project. But at this point I can not do "wall by face", only "load into project"
This is starting to become fun.

yes that's correct, load it into your project and wall by face or the curtain system...
the DOME program is cool! and what's even cooler is that it's running in Linux!
i loaded the family into a project and was able to use walls...
have fun

Are you into domes? Most people I know associate them with old hippies. So it's unusual to have someone ask me to do one. I'll have more questions, and let me know if you discover any cool Revit tricks to do with this geometry.

I like geodesic domes very much, it is a very strong and clever, i know there is a company around your area that sell geodesic homes as a kit, using 2 meter triangle pieces, it looks cool
it is very good for high wind area, because the wind just creates a down pressure on the dome!
have fun with it
and no I'm not a hippie! lol

It worked, thank you. The only problem is, I have about 5 panels that are on the outside of the shell instead of the inside. I can't find the "flip" symbols and right clicking on the panel does not give me the option. How do I correct it?
My client are looking at concrete domes from this company: http://www.aidomes.com/default.html. It's a concrete shell and is also fire rated, which will be important in it's forest setting. We're looking to be off the grid. The price of about $23,000 offset the shipping cost from across the country, considering building cost in California.
I got to see R. Buckminster Fuller speak in the 70's. He had a lasting impression on me. Does that make me an old hippie?
